Here are the basics:

Usually you want a save the date sent out as soon as you pick your date so people can block out the day on their schedules.

Next you want to send out your formal invitation set no later than three months before the big day.
An invitation set typically includes an invitation and an RSVP card. It can also include information about the venue, maps, and decorative elements like confetti or an envelope seal.

So a typical set will include:

Save the date
Invitation
RSVP
